What size western saddle for my husband?
Louise asked:
I’m not very familiar with how western saddles are measured for riders. I’ve always ridden english. My husband just started riding and the two saddles we have available are way to small, his butt almost goes over the edge. He is 5′8″ and about 185lbs; he is normal body shape/size. What size saddle in inches might fit him? (just so i can have an idea before saddle shopping) thank you

This chart helps with a WESTERN saddle seat sizes…based on the rider’s height and weight…
This suggests a 17″ seat for your husband.

He’s a little taller than my hubby…Maybe their butts are close in size.
Steve wears a 36″ waist in jeans and when he rides, he uses a 16″ Western saddle.
LOL…just read the other answers…either he has a little butt or the saddle is too small….

I’d use a 16″ to an 18″. Take your husband shopping with you, so he can try out the saddles, and which one is most comfortable to him. There should be a little space for him to move around. My father has an Astralian Stock Saddle and is 6′ and about the same weight. I believe he has an 18″ saddle seat. Good luck with your shopping!

From his size and you say all is average… a 16″ should do the trick.
Measure his thigh length (at the bend to the knee) and that will give you a round a bout measure.
For a true proper fit you should see a tack store near you that deals in saddles. They normally have a person qualified in fitting.

My husband uses a 16″… you don’t want something too big or too small…for either the horse or the rider!
You want the saddle to fit the horse properly! Make certain you get the right size bars (semi, or full quarter horse, arab, etc…)….

I suggest going to a local tack store that sells saddles. They will be able to not only make sure it fits your hubby, but you horse as well. My guess is somewhere around a 17″, and it’s better to go a bit bigger rather than smaller. He needs to be able to position himself in the front, center and rear of the seat.

I suggest that you take your husband to the tack store with you not only to get the right size but a style that is comfartable for him. something with a deep comfy seat padded or not let him choose and dont forget the horse. your hubby will lova for that.
